Contextual Related Posts
The Pros: Recommendation based on context, many options for customization, no registration required and it’s free
The Cons: Requires basic CSS knowledge, blocked for some hosting companies
As its name indicates the idea behind Contextual Related Posts is that recommendations are made on a contextual basis, meaning that a post can be recommended as related although it is not from the same category or has the same keywords. In fact, the plugin “understands” the meaning of an article (as far as a WP plugin can do that…). Especially for the lazy ones around who do not tag their posts this is great news (you should tag them though, Followistic works way better then 🙂
Beyond this key point of differentiation the Contextual Related Posts plugin actually offers a clean user interface with many different options to customize the displaying of the widget. Text links work out of the box while thumbnail recommendations are a bit more tricky to set up. CSS knowledge sure helps.
The plugin is self-hosted, meaning just as with YARPP, it can actually slow down your website if it is very large. That is why some hosting companies such as WP Engine actually do not allowAthe use of Contextual Related Posts. So, if you are with WP Engine you should better look for a plugin with external hosting such asAZemantaAorAContextly.
As Contextual Related Posts is self-hosted there is no registration required and the plugin is free of charge. The developer behind it, Ajay DaSouza, is very customer-friendly and answers all questions in the WP forum himself. Pretty cool 🙂
On a side note, there is no option to monetize with Contextual Related Posts. However, if you came here looking for a pure related posts plugin you were probably not looking for that option anyways.
